This list is from my previous post "Know Your Roots". Knowing these about yourself will help you a lot! You can start to help yourself instead of needing others to help you (not saying that's a terrible thing, just its not convenient).
Here are my answers.
1- Do I have panic attacks often about simple things or do I only have panic attacks when I'm in an actual stressful situation?
The first one is a sign of being an anxious person, the second is quite normal.
I have panic attacks about small simple things that have no need of being panicked over! That is a very large sign of my anxiety! I focus on the little things which throws me into a panic mode!
2- What form do my panic attacks take? (hard of breathing, pulsing in hands)
I become cotton mouthed (which makes it hard to swallow) and hard to breathe, also a little light-headed.
3- When Im in panic what do I do to calm myself? (music, meds, alcohol)
Vick's vapor rub was an addiction of mine, so were cough drops (fact: eating 10+ cough drops a day kills the inside of your cheek and ruins your teeth!). I drank a lot of tea and coffee. and ALWAYS had water with me incase my mouth got dry from Panicking!
Coping is kind of what you have to discover, everyone is different. I have friends who go for walks and that calms them down instantly - some of us don't have it that easy. I have friends who go through an entire routine of tapping their legs so many times, cutting their arms so many times (the pain eases the panic). There are obviously some that are healthier than others. You need to find a SAFE and HEALTHY way to cope or else its going to get messier!
Ive discovered after time that writing poems about what I'm feeling in the middle of a panic attack actually really helps me.. It took me forever to get there but if I was in a class in high school where I couldn't pay attention because I was panicking, Id rip out my notebook and start writing line after line. ( I will post the poems in the future!) Music, especially worship music, purposeful music, positive music got me out of panic. Going for runs or dancing got me out of a panic because I was moving and plus I love doing both of those things. Running makes you feel like you are going somewhere, like youre escaping the panic! I love it!
4- What is my trigger? (person, place, word, object)
I have way too many to list or even remember. I can give you a few recents though.
- Major life changes (moving, losing someone)
- hard to deal situations - car breaking down and me not having the finances to fix it, being evicted.
- being alone. I do not like when I'm alone anywhere! For some reason this gets me anxious. I have yet to get to the root of it, but I'm in the works of finding that out because no one can do that for me and it will help me tremendously!
- Feeling Nauseas gets me extremely panicked!
Unfortunately it did not take me over night or just one week to find these things out and discover them. Maybe it will for you! (: It's different for everyone! The worst thing you can do is what I did for the first few years I had Anxiety, ignore it. Ignoring it will not make it go away, I'm sorry! I hate to be the rain on your parade! Anxiety is just fear and ask any professional; the best thing to do when you afraid of something is learn EVERYTHING about it! It puts things into perspective!
I promise you there is hope! I triple promise! (: This coming from someone who was at rock bottom just less than a year ago...
I'm living proof that things get better, easier said than done. I know what its like to feel like there isn't a light. I was there right where you are once upon a time! and I'm now dancing in the light. Let me help you help yourself.
XOXOXO
